Illuminating Life: Personal Encounters

Rothamsted Research’s Illuminating Life: Personal Encounters Photo-story Competition forms part of the Institutes’ efforts to support and encourage the engagement of children and young adults with agriculture.

From Monday 20th June to Friday 2nd December we invited online submissions to the competition. The competition, which was free to enter, had three age categories: 7 to 10 years, 11 to 14 years and 15 to 18 years. Recognising a camera as a piece of light-based technology the entrants were briefed to take an original image of an agricultural landscape and/or practice. A brief description of the agricultural landscape and/or practice encountered must have accompanied each photograph submitted. Entrants were allowed to make as many submissions of an original photograph, plus accompanying description, as they wished. Photographs taken from smart phone devices were accepted and original photographs submitted could have been taken between 2014 and 2016.

Entrant’s photo-stories were judged on the basis of the photo’s originality and the imaginative description of the agricultural landscape and/or practice encountered.

The winner, runner up, and highly commended photo-story, in each age category will receive a prize. Prizes include a commemorative framed copy of winning photo-stories, a year's school membership of the Royal Society of Biology, and other goodies.
