Harpenden
Summary:

Prof Jon West is a senior research scientist (band F), working as a plant pathologist at Rothamsted Research, with extensive experience in applied multi-disciplinary crop protection projects. Jon obtained a BSc in Biology from Royal Holloway, London in 1990 and a PhD in Plant Pathology at Reading in 1994. At Rothamsted, since 1997, Jon's work has focussed on the biology and control of fungal diseases, measurement of plant disease resistance, the early detection of diseases by optical sensing and dispersal and detection of airborne spores for disease forecasting and population studies. Systems currently under investigation are, fusarium ear blight and yellow rust in wheat and sclerotinia and stem canker (blackleg) of oilseed rape, potato blight, beet foliar diseases and diseases of tomato.

Currently, as part of ten research projects, Jon manages two postdoctoral research scientists and one research assistant. Funding organisations in the past ten years include Defra-LINK, Defra, AHDB-cereals and oilseeds (HGCA), InnovateUK (TSB), EFSA and the EU.

Jon is experienced in communicating his work to the public, students, agricultural personnel and scientists at all levels – having made invited keynote speeches at international conferences, represented Rothamsted during visits to Chinese government and research organizations, and having acted on a number of committees at Rothamsted (Field and farm experiments committee, Scientific meetings committee), the UK (Association of Applied Biologists – Applied mycology and bacteriology group, British Aerobiology Federation, STEM ambassador – talks to schools on food security and science) and internationally (Associate Editor for the European Journal of Plant Pathology 2006-2012), Associate Editor for Aerobiologia 2013-2016).  Jon is currently secretary of the BCPC diseases working group, a plant health panel member at EFSA, a member of the British Society for Plant Pathology and his work has been recognized with awards from MAFF (now Defra), two patents and an honorary Professorship from the Anhui Academy of Agricultural Sciences, China.
