Agroecosystems modeller
Sustainable Soils and Crops
BIOGRAPHY
Michael is a biologist with a background in computational biology, image processing and algorithm development. During his PhD at ETH Zurich, he studied growth and diel (24 h) growth patterns of plants as affected by environmental and biochemical parameters. From his previous work, he has extensive experience in usage, optimization, automatization and visualisation for multiple, image based plant phenotyping platforms and high-throughput spatio-temporal data analysis in biomedical settings. He is currently developing novel mathematical models and tools to quantify the sustainability of agroecosystems and trade-offs of sustainable development goals. As a member of the TSARA (Towards Sustainable And Resilient Agriculture) project he is investigating means to support the development of pathways to deliver the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and targets, especially those relevant to agriculture, the bioeconomy and the terrestrial environment. He has also a keen interest in the history of science, the propagation of scientific ideas and “digital research archaeology".
